Definition: PRINCIPLE 6 - Measure Efficiency to Gain Efficiency with Modern Metrics
By Tom Onquit
Efficiency cannot be gained if the baseline has not been measured and compared to what AI augmentation now delivers. But measurement only drives improvement if the metrics themselves are calibrated to the new reality. Metrics designed for week-long or day-long delivery cycles do not accurately capture performance when work now completes in hours or less.
The most important modernization: cycle time is no longer the primary efficiency signal. When AI-augmented work routinely completes in under a day, a one-hour cycle and a four-hour cycle are both 'the same day'—the difference is significant but invisible to a daily or weekly cycle time metric. What matters more is the number of cycles completed for a given work type, and the total time consumed across those cycles.
