Definition: PRINCIPLE 5 - Know and Increase Capacity by Accelerating Speed
By Tom Onquit
In the AI era, the traditional two-week sprint model—measured in story points delivered per sprint—is no longer an accurate reflection of team capacity. AI-augmented work is now delivered in minutes and hours, not days and weeks. Measuring capacity at sprint or weekly granularity means teams are blind to most of the work happening within each day.
Capacity in the AI era must be measured at the granularity at which work is actually delivered: per hour and per day. Metrics like tasks per hour, workflows completed per day, and AI-assisted outputs per day provide the real-time visibility that teams need to understand their true capacity—and to intentionally increase it.
