Why This Principle Matters in the AI Era (Part 1): PRINCIPLE 13 - Serve the Consumer and the Output Leader
By Tom Onquit
AI has created an important tension. Because generation is fast, there is a real risk that workers optimize for output volume rather than output relevance—producing many things quickly without checking whether those things serve the actual recipients. Principle 11 is the corrective force for that risk. 🚀 The Speed Risk 🎯 The Service Obligation AI can generate a first draft in minutes. That speed advantage is only realized if the output is what the Consumer actually needs—not what the worker assumed they needed. The worker must incorporate the Consumer's requirements and the Output Leader's standards into every iteration. AI handles generation; the worker owns the obligation to ensure the output serves the right people in the right way. Without a service orientation, AI-era speed creates more problems than it solves: outputs arrive faster but require more rework, miss stated requirements, or reflect the worker's interpretation of quality rather than the recipients'. The service-oriented heart is the discipline that connects generation speed to genuine value. This principle reinforces the Collaboration value directly. Serving the Consumer and Output Leader requires listening, incorporating external input, and subordinating individual preference to shared standards. It is the opposite of working in isolation—it is collaboration with the people who define what the work is for. 👥 The Two Recipient Roles — What Serving Them Requires Recipient Role Who They Are What Serving Them Looks Like 👤 Consumer / Customer / User The end recipient of the work output—the person who uses, applies, or acts on what the team produces. May be an internal stakeholder, an external customer, a system user, or a leader who relies on the output to make decisions. Understand their requirements before production begins. Incorporate their stated needs, use case, and deadlines into every iteration. Validate AI-generated output against their specific need before submitting for acceptance.
