Definition: PRINCIPLE 19 - Out with the Old Ways and Mentality, In with the New
By Tom Onquit
The AI era does not reward teams that tolerate change. It rewards teams that actively pursue it—and that means being willing to examine everything currently in place and ask, honestly, whether it still belongs there.
Meetings that no longer serve their purpose should be removed, not multiplied. Approval steps that no longer add genuine value should be redesigned, not preserved out of organizational inertia. Role definitions that no longer reflect what AI has changed should be rewritten, not protected because they have always been that way. Review cycles that were calibrated to a slower world should be recalibrated, not kept on a schedule that no longer matches the rhythm of the work.
But the harder half of this principle is not the process changes. It is the mental model changes. A team that says yes to new tools while maintaining a fixed conviction that the old ways were basically fine will not get the value the tools were supposed to deliver. The tool changes the possible. The mindset change is what makes the possible actual.
