Customizable (Part 1): ATTRIBUTE 9 - Customizable
By Tom Onquit
A framework that demands full adoption before delivering any value is a framework most real organizations will never use. Real organizations carry regulatory constraints, existing investments, cultural inertia, competing priorities, and practical limitations that no framework designer can fully anticipate. Demanding wholesale adoption as the price of entry is not principled. It is a barrier that keeps the framework on the shelf. WEEFAI is built to be customized to the organization, not the other way around. If a principle cannot be implemented — because of compliance obligations, cultural context, current policy, or simple bandwidth — the organization still gains significant and compounding value from every other principle. The framework is not a monolith. Each value and principle stands on its own and compounds when combined with others. Ninety-five percent adoption delivers far more than zero percent, and zero percent is what rigidity produces. Customization looks different in different organizational contexts:
Regulatory-constrained organizations can adopt all principles except those in direct conflict with compliance obligations — and should name those gaps explicitly rather than quietly working around them. Transparency about customization decisions is itself a WEEFAI principle. Early-stage AI adopters often gain the most by beginning with People First Over AI, Transparency and Adaptability, and the daily cadence before expanding further. These three build the foundation that makes everything else more effective. Organizations with return-to-office requirements can adopt the spirit of availability and productivity principles even where they cannot adopt specific locality dimensions. The goal is accessible, responsive collaboration — not a particular physical arrangement.
