The Practical Side: Eliminating Outdated Manual Work: PRINCIPLE 9 - Work Practically and Sustainably
By Tom Onquit
The practical half of this principle is about not being sentimental about inefficient processes. If there is a better way, use it. The following patterns indicate that a manual practice is a candidate for AI assistance or elimination:
The task is repetitive, follows a consistent pattern, and requires no unique human judgment on each instance The task was originally manual because no better tool existed—not because manual execution is inherently better Team members frequently describe the task as tedious, slow, or low-value relative to the time it requires The task produces outputs that are then reviewed or transformed by a downstream process—making the initial manual step an inefficient intermediate layer AI tools in the team's current stack are already capable of performing or substantially assisting with this task Identifying and eliminating these tasks is an act of respect for the team's time. Every hour reclaimed from low-value manual work is an hour available for judgment, review, and the higher-value contributions that AI cannot replicate.
🌱 The Sustainable Side: Protecting Human Capacity AI accelerates output. But the human elements of quality delivery—review, judgment, iteration, and creative direction—require cognitive capacity that depletes with use and must be restored. Sustainable work practice is not about working less; it is about working in a way that allows the team to deliver high-quality AI-augmented outputs today, tomorrow, and over the long term.
